When the tools we depend on every day are owned and governed elsewhere, those values quietly erode. Soomi exists to keep the everyday infrastructure of work, your mail, files, and documents, under Canadian ownership, Canadian law, and Canadian values.
Regaining autonomy from US dependence
Most of the software the country runs on is American, and subject to American law, including the CLOUD Act, which can compel access to data no matter where in the world it's stored. That's a dependence most of us never chose and rarely even see. Recent years have made the risk plain: access, pricing, and terms can shift with a policy decision made far outside our borders. Soomi is a deliberate step back toward autonomy: a complete office suite owned and hosted in Canada, with no US entity, no US staff, and no US data centre for a foreign government to reach through.
No longer the product
The free, and “free-ish,” services were never really free. In exchange, our documents, messages, and habits became the raw material: used to train AI models, profile us for advertising, and track us across the web, with little privacy and even less control. When you don't pay for the product, you are the product. Soomi flips that relationship. It's a paid service with a simple promise: we don't mine your data, we don't train AI on it, and we don't sell your attention. You're the customer again, not the product.
