Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Soomi: what it is, what's included, and how your data stays under Canadian law.

What is Soomi?

Soomi Office is a Canadian productivity suite for files, email, calendars, documents and calls, built on Nextcloud Hub. It brings Files, Talk (chat and video), Office apps (Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations, and others), Photos and email together in one easy-to-use platform. It's built on open source, and 100% Canadian owned, hosted and supported.

Why did you create Soomi?

We created Soomi to solve a growing problem. We have become reliant on large US corporations for our services. In return, we became the product, even when we pay for services. Our data is not private, we're tracked, and our email, files, even pictures are used to train AI models and serve us targeted ads we don't want. It's out of control, and there were no options to escape it, until now. We created Soomi to give control back to Canadians. There's absolutely no US (or other country's) exposure to your data on our platform. We are 100% under the jurisdiction of Canadian law only, and because it's built on open source, auditable, and you control every bit of data, you're back to being the customer instead of the product.

Is Soomi only for business?

No. Soomi offers very economical packages for both consumers and businesses. The consumer side has options for standalone or family accounts of up to 5 people.

Why are you charging for email and storage for consumers when Google and others give it for free?

The reality is that Google, Microsoft, Facebook/Instagram and others are NOT free. YOU are the product, and they're making billions of dollars mining your data, training their AIs and serving you ads. We have become the product, and because there are real costs to operating a platform like this, we unfortunately cannot provide a free tier. Society is paying an enormous cost, not only in dollars but in very real consequences to our freedoms. Soomi is trying to change this, so we are very reasonably priced and, most importantly, you will never be the product: no ads, no AI training, no exposure to secret back-door government access.

How much does it cost?

We're still finalizing our pricing, but we are very focused on providing a high-value service for a very reasonable price. Sign up for an invitation below, answer a few questions about your needs, and we'll send you an invitation as soon as we're ready to accept you. You'll be able to see our finalized pricing before you do a thing.

What do I get in the suite?

Soomi combines file storage and sharing, email, calendar and contacts, online documents/spreadsheets/presentations, and chat/video calling. Soomi has packaged all of those into one workspace, so you don't need to maintain separate apps, tools or your own storage.

What does Soomi offer besides the apps?

Soomi is built on Nextcloud Hub's core components, but delivered as a ready-to-use, Canadian-hosted suite. We add a managed layer around the platform so customers get a simpler experience: pre-configuration, hosting and operations, controlled updates, onboarding, user management, billing, and support.

How hard is it to migrate from Google Workspace or Microsoft 365?

Most migrations are fast and easy. Our core components rely on open formats and protocols like CalDAV for calendars, IMAP for email, and common document formats like DOCX, XLSX and PPTX, which makes switching pretty painless.

Can I edit Word/Excel/PowerPoint and Google Docs/Sheets, etc.?

Yes. We support all of those formats, as well as open formats like ODF.

Does Soomi include email, calendar and contacts?

Soomi includes a webmail client plus calendar and contacts, and is designed to integrate with Files. It also supports standard protocols like IMAP/POP3 for mail and CalDAV/CardDAV for calendar and contacts, which helps portability.

Can I host video calls and chat without Teams or Meet?

Yes. Soomi combines chat with video calls and webinars, and supports features like screen sharing. It's built to work alongside file sharing and document collaboration inside the same workspace.

Can I share files and photos with people outside my organization?

Soomi lets you share files using public links, with options like password protection and expiry dates. You can also create multiple links with different permissions for the same file or folder.

Where is my data stored, and why does jurisdiction matter?

All of your data is stored in data centres located in Canada and operated solely under Canadian law. It stays in Canada by default, is never replicated to servers outside Canada, and is never moved out on its own. Jurisdiction matters because the law that governs your data depends on where it sits and who runs it. Data held in Canada by a Canadian company falls solely under Canadian law, and is out of reach of foreign legislation such as the US CLOUD Act, which can compel US-based providers to hand over data no matter where in the world it's kept, even data related to non-US citizens. Storing your data on Canadian soil, with a Canadian provider, is what turns that protection from a promise into a fact.

I'm in the US. Can I sign up?

Yes. We are actually getting enormous interest from US customers looking to ensure their data is under their control, as they grow increasingly concerned about the erosion of their privacy rights. It's important to note that, as a US entity, you or your company can still be compelled to provide your data under US law. However, unlike data already held by US companies, the government cannot compel Soomi directly under the US CLOUD Act. There are legal ways a US authority can compel the release of information, but it must go through the Canadian legal system. They cannot directly, or secretly, retrieve information from Soomi, as they can today with US providers.

Will it work on desktop and mobile?

Soomi provides desktop sync clients for Windows, macOS and Linux, plus mobile apps, so your files can follow you across devices. You can also use the web interface if you don't want to install anything.

When can I start using Soomi?

Soomi is currently preparing for its official launch and is working step by step to make its services available to both consumers and business customers across Canada and the US. The first release is planned for Q3 and will focus on the core platform and basic services, including Soomi Drive for secure cloud storage and file management. This initial phase is designed to provide a stable and reliable foundation while additional applications and services are finalized. During Q3 and Q4, Soomi plans to gradually expand the platform with more productivity, collaboration, and business-oriented tools. The rollout will take place in phases to ensure quality, security, and compliance with Canadian standards and regulations. More information about availability, features, and launch dates will be shared through Soomi's official channels as development progresses.

I have a technical product or integration idea. Can we partner?
